Growing Up in Christ in 2010?

On Tuesday 12th January, those attending our regular mid-week Bible study considered a series of questions posed by Elder Stephen Gaston.  Stephen explained that for some time he had been hearing from the Lord that He really wants His church in Ennis to mature in Christ.

Here is the list of questions together with the odd prompt or explanation for you to meditate over and consider what God wants you to commit to in 2010.  What is God putting on your heart as you consider the following:

  1. Do you believe God has called you to His kingdom?
  2. Do you believe this involves you being planted in a local church?
If the answer to these questions is 'yes', then
  3. What do you see as the purpose of the local church?
  4. Do you believe God has a purpose for you in your local church?  If so, what is it and/or where can you find out what it is?  (Think specifically as well as more generally as a follower of Christ.  Remember that specific purposes can change over time)
  5. Are you fulfilling this purpose?  If so, how (what practical action does it involve), if not, why not (e.g. laziness, lethargy, uncertainty, etc)?
  6. Do you believe God needs commitment from you in fulfilling His purpose?  If so, why?
  7. What sort of heart is God looking for in those that serve His church?
  8. How will you ensure that you fulfil your God-given purpose in 2010?
  9. Who has God sent to help us work out His purposes?  How does He help?
  10. If you are not experiencing this Helper, why is that?
  11. What is God saying to His local church (in Ennis or where you are)?
  12. What will be the outcome if you fulfil (personally and corporately) your God-given purpose in 2010?
  13. What will your church look like by the end of 2010?
  14. Will you now commit, from this moment on, to find and fulfil your purpose?

Please spend time thinking about these questions - they are designed to challenge you and cause you to seek God for the answers!  When you feel God has revealed His purpose for you, and you have committed to fulfil it

  • Find someone in the fellowship to be accountable to (otherwise you may find it hard to remain dedicated to accomplish it)
  • Pray (with the person you have made yourself accountable to) about the purpose and its fulfilment.

Stephen closed the study with these verses from the book of Ephesians (Eph 4:11-16)

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head - Christ - from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

If this has challenged you and you'd like to ask questions or share thoughts or views about God's purposes (for you individually or the Ennis Evangelical Church corporately), why not discuss them on the EEC Forum?
