He came as a witness, to bear witness about the light, that all might believe through him. Joh 1:7

Witnessing to Others

Every born-again Christian has the privilege of being used by God to spread the Good News.  Being used by God as a 'midwife' in the re-birth of a person into God’s family brings great joy and happiness.  The actual miracle of re-birth is performed by the Holy Spirit.  We are the instruments that He uses. The moment we experience the Lord Jesus, we become responsible to be His witnesses.

How Do You Share the Good News?

Christians can take some practical steps to prepare themselves for sharing the Good News with others.

Before anything, we need to allow the Holy Spirit to develop within us a love for the lost and a passion to see them come to know the Lord - Paul was motivated by such a love for the lost Jews of his day.  When the Holy Spirit develops a love for the lost in our hearts, it becomes one of the greatest motivating factors in our lives.

To help this develop, you might study Romans 10:1 and 2 Corinthians 5:11 and 14.

There are some basic steps to leading a soul to the Lord.  These can be summarised as follows:

CONFESS        REPENT        RECEIVE        ACCEPT

Mature Christians or the Elders in the church will be happy to talk with you about them but you should always pray for guidance, wisdom and humility before you begin.

Assuming that the person you are helping is already aware of their sins

  • Help them to CONFESS before God that they are sinners and to ask for forgiveness (1 John 1:9)

  • Show them that confession must include REPENTANCE which is a deliberate turning away from sin.  Without repentance confession is meaningless.  In Luke chapter 13, Jesus twice says, “I tell you … unless you repent, you too will all perish” (verses 3 & 5).

  • Then help them to RECEIVE the Lord Jesus Christ into their lives.  This step is essential to becoming a child of God. “yet to all who received Him, to those who believed in His name, He gave the right to become the children of God". (John 1:12)
This third and vital step is to be taken by way of a simple prayer such as the one at the bottom of the Getting Saved page.

  • Help them now to ACCEPT that the Lord has responded and has forgiven their sins, come to live in them and that as a result they HAVE received the gift of eternal life.
Accepting God's wonderful gift of forgiveness can be difficult and it might help to take them through the following Scriptures:

    • John 1:12, asking them, “If you have received Jesus into your life, what does He promise to do for you in this verse?”

    • Revelations 3:20, asking them, “If you have invited Jesus to come into your life what does this verse say He has done?”

    • 1 John 5:11-12, asking them, “Now that you have invited Jesus to come and live in you what has he brought into your life?”

The answer should be ETERNAL LIFE.  As you go through the Scriptures, trust the Holy Spirit to begin to witness with their spirits that they are children of God.  He is faithful - He will do His part.  As the reality of this assurance dawns, be prepared to see a miracle take place before your eyes!

Enjoy sharing your faith!
